Programs and Services


The following is a list of programs available to students in the district, as well as the location.  Transportation is provided for all programs located out of district.
 
Early Childhood Program (ECP)
This classroom program is designed for children from 2.5-5 years of age who are identified by a multidisciplinary evaluation team as eligible for special education services.  Students who
have developmental delays will be provided with skills necessary for success in later formal education.  A parent component is also provided, with opportunities for modeling of successful techniques and added support for parents.

4 days/ week; Session 1: 8:15 - 10:45am Session 2: 10:45-1:15pm

 

Early Childhood Special Education Services
Early intervention is designed for children ages 0 through 5 years who are eligible for services as having a disability or developmental delay.  This program focuses on developing communication, mobility and social skills.  Parents may participate with an Early Childhood Teacher, speech pathologist, and occupational or physical therapist to teach children these skills.

Minimum 2 hours per week
 

Cognitive Impairment (CI) Program
Students who qualify for special education as having a cognitive impairment or function at this level are provided with individualized instruction in classrooms taught by a special education teacher trained in this area.  Classrooms with a small number of students are provided at the elementary, middle and high school levels.  Special education aide support is also provided for each classroom.  The goal of the program is for students to obtain skills to live more independently.  The program focuses on functional academics, daily living skills, social skills, self-care skills, and prevocational skills.  The students in the program are included in general education classes as much as possible, as determined by the Individualized Education Program.    For students who require a more supportive program, Lapeer County Intermediate School District offers a center-based Moderate Cognitive Impairment (MoCI) program for 14-26 year olds.

Emotional Impairment ( EI) Program
 
Students who qualify as having an emotional impairment and require more supportive programming to teach appropriate behavior skills are provided with individualized instruction in classrooms taught by special education teachers trained in this area.  Classrooms with a small number of students are provided at the elementary and secondary level.  This program focuses on the development of positive behavior as well as academic support.  Students are provided with opportunities in general education, when appropriate, to allow them to develop social skills in the environment in which they naturally occur.

Resource Room Program
One or more resource rooms are located in each elementary and secondary school in the school district.  These programs provide academic assistance for students who are eligible for special education with the full range of disabilities who spend a majority of time in the general education program.
 

Ancillary Services
School Social Work (SSW) Services
The school social worker assists students whose social and emotional problems interfere with learning and prohibits the student from benefiting from the school experience.  They consult with parents, students, teachers, and administrators.
The school social worker is a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET), and coordinates services between the school and community.       

School Psychologist
The school psychologist is a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET), and is involved with the evaluation of students being considered for special education services.  Assessment consists of a comprehensive psychological evaluation which may involve teacher input, classroom observations, cognitive, adaptive and/or academic testing, and consultation with classroom teachers regarding intervention strategies.  The school psychologist also participates in Child Study meetings to help develop intervention plans for at-risk students. 

Speech and Language Therapy
Speech and language pathologists work with student who have communication impairments, including:  articulation, voice, fluency or language.  The speech pathologist may work with students individually, in small groups, or in the student's classroom.

LCISD Ancillary Services
Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT)
Occupational and/or physical therapy are provided when the Individual Education Program Team  (IEPT) determines these services are necessary in order for the student to benefit from the education program.  The therapist evaluates a student's needs, develops and implements therapy programs, and provides consultative services.  For school-age children, these services are provided in the school setting.                        

Visual Impairment (VI) Teacher The Lapeer County Intermediate School District provides services of a visual impairment teacher for those students  having a visual impairment that require specialized instruction and/or consultation to the general or special education teacher.

Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M)  The Lapeer County ISD provides services of an O&M specialist for assessment of students who are  visually impaired and determine their ability to move freely within the environment and provide for orientation and mobility training.  

Autism Consultant (AITC) The Lapeer County Intermediate School District provides services of an autism consultant for those students eligible for services as a student with Autism.  Services include participating in the evaluation as part of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team, as well as providing consultation to staff members and parents. 

Educational Audiologist  The Lapeer County ISD provides services of an educational audiologist, which consists of hearing evaluations, training, setting and monitoring of hearing equipment, and consultation to teachers. 

Hearing Impaired Teacher (HITC)  The Lapeer County ISD provides hearing impaired teacher services for those students with a  hearing impairment that require specialized instruction or consultation to the general or special education teacher. 

Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) The Lapeer County ISD provides speech and language therapy services for those students ages 0 through 3, with a   speech and language impairment that require special instruction.  Therapy may consist of consultation with parent, individualized therapy and/or playgroup.

 
LCISD Programs
 Moderate and Severe Cognitive Impairment Program
The Lapeer County Intermediate School District provides students with a  cognitive impairment functioning in the moderate to severe range who require maximum support  individualized instruction by teachers trained in this area.  The program focuses on vocational, daily living, self-care, and functional academic skills to prepare students to transition to post school activities.

Severe Multiple Impairment ( SXI) Program  The Lapeer County Intermediate School District provides students who are eligible as having a severe multiple impairment who require maximum support a program including small class size and individualized instruction.
